Delta de Llobregat

The Barcelona international airport is surrounded by a wetland called Delta de Llobregat. It’s an excellent place to get a really close look of the busy birdlife. It’s easiest to reach by car. The distances might seem short looking at the map, but distance can easily be a 5-10 km when getting to the next place because of the airport. Alternatively one could walk or bike along the beach. Gear used during the trip: D3s and Tamron 150-600.

Map of Delta de Llobregat. As you can see on the map there are 4 different places to visit. The best places are numbers 1 and 2. We did not visit number 3 and can’t recommend number 4.

Number 1: Espais naturals del riu (Maps and information: CalTet and CalTet Arena)

Excellent park free of charge to visit with 2 great hideouts where you are able to get really close to the birds. In winter there were not many people and that is a big plus in our books. The area is fenced so be sure to check out the opening hours before your visit. Also be prepared to hike a bit to reach the hideouts.

Number 2: El remolar – Filipines (Maps and information: Maresma de Filipines)

This place is great even if you don’t have that much time to enjoy the park. Normally you can drive all the way to the information point and from there it’s a really short walk to both of the excellent hideouts. Be aware though, if the gate is closed you must park your car outside on the other side of the roundabout. It’s a 15 minutes walk from the main gate to the information desk. This park is also free of charge, but you should check the opening hours when planning the visit. You should also note that this park is more popular than the number 1, Espais naturals del riu and if your noisy camera shutter doesn’t scare off the birds, the locals will with their ongoing chit-chat about who’s got the longest lens.
