Ebro Delta revisited

Breaking the rules

Back in Ebro Delta again. It has been one year since the last visit but this time we focused on Barcelona and spent only one day in Ebro Delta wetlands. It is well suited for a day-trip from Barcelona and takes about 1 1/2 hours one way by car using the toll-highway (autopista AP-7, €20-30 one way). There is an option for those that have more time and are looking to save some money by taking the “scenery-route” along the coast. This will take 30-60 minutes longer but you end up saving the highway tolls. As mentioned this time our hub was located in the outskirts of Barcelona, Castelldefels. We rented a car that we used to get around and the first day we spent at Delta Ebro, 150 km south from Barcelona.

Gear used: Nikon 3Ds, Tamron 150-600 and a Nikon D800 with nifty fifty.

Our favorite spots 1-3 in Delta Ebro. Copyright: NASA

Nr. 1 Les Olles Lagoon (52 ha)
Great place for a walk along the beach and lagoon. We spotted several Hoopoes, Glossy Ibises, European Goldfinches and herons. (For a better view please click on the pictures below)

Nr.2 L’Encanyissada Lagoon (1.192 ha)
Our favorite spots for spotting Kingfishers are here. There are 2 birdtowers that both have an excellent view looking over Kingfishers, herons, morehens, Western Swamphens and birds of pray. Sometimes there are also ducks such as Common shelduck and a small flock of Flamingoes. The towers also offer a great possibility to observe and photograph birds flying by quite close.  (For a better view please click on the pictures below)

Nr.3. La Tancada Lagoon (312 ha)
One of the best spots for Flamingos. There were literally thousands of flamingos this time when we visited in January.  (For a better view please click on the pictures below)
