Delta de Llobregat

The Barcelona international airport is surrounded by a wetland called Delta de Llobregat. It’s an excellent place to get a really close look of the busy birdlife. It’s easiest to reach by car. The distances might seem short looking at the map, but distance can easily be a 5-10 km when getting to the next place because of the airport. Alternatively one could walk or bike along the beach. Gear used during the trip: D3s and Tamron 150-600.

Ebro Delta revisited

Breaking the rules

Back in Ebro Delta again. It has been one year since the last visit but this time we focused on Barcelona and spent only one day in Ebro Delta wetlands. It is well suited for a day-trip from Barcelona and takes about 1 1/2 hours one way by car using the toll-highway (autopista AP-7, €20-30 one way). There is an option for those that have more time and are looking to save some money by taking the “scenery-route” along the coast. This will take 30-60 minutes longer but you end up saving the highway tolls. As mentioned this time our hub was located in the outskirts of Barcelona, Castelldefels. We rented a car that we used to get around and the first day we spent at Delta Ebro, 150 km south from Barcelona.

Day trip to Liesjärvi National Park

A day trip to beautiful Liesjärvi National Park located between Karkkila and Forssa in Southern Finland. The park is large so we decided to go for a 5k walking trip called Pohjantikka (blue route). There is a parking area close to the Korteniemi heritage farm from where the track begins. The heritage farm is also worthwhile a closer look and the entry is free of charge. At the farm there are chickens, cows, sheep and horses to mention a few. At the heritage farm we encountered a couple of people, but in the path, there was only one elderly couple that crossed our path. We started our walk at around 10AM, so we were not that early on. Comparing to Nuuksio for example, this is a peaceful journey thru the beautiful forest scenery surrounded by lakes. Our trip took roughly around 3-4 hours, mainly because of the blueberries we stopped to pick. From Pitkäkärki, that is about halfway of the blue route you can see the island group called Isotsaaret. In one of them there is a nesting couple of ospreys. We also encountered a great spotted woodpecker, black-throated loons, eurasian curlews, common sandpipers and barn swallows.

For more information of the Liesjärvi National Park, please visit Metsähallitus web pages called www.nationalparks.fi

Here are a couple of shots from the trip.

Rynningeviken nature reservoir in the outskirts of Örebro, Sweden

Spring is marching on and the first migrating birds are starting to arrive. A trip to Rynningeviken has become something of an annual thing. For me this is the start for the annual birding season.

A winter trip back to Ebro Delta

Kingfisher hiding

Kingfisher hiding

This time we visited the wetlands in winter. We stayed at the Tancat De Codorniu hotel which used to be the summer house of Spanish King Alfonso XII. The hotel is surrounded by fields of oranges, and offers an real treat between the adventures to the delta area and the mountains. We spend most of the time exploring the wetlands but also a couple of days at the mountains in the Els Ports and Benifassa nature reserves. The last night we stayed in Barcelona and had the chance to visit Delta del Llobregat next to El Prat-Barcelona airport. Both wetlands were full of life and definitely worth while visiting in winter.
